Description
Rwanda's coffee history is one of redemption, courage, and unqualified commitment to a better tomorrow. Known as the Land of the Thousand Hills, Rwanda's geography and topography are near ideal for coffee growing: rich volcanic soil resting on peaks that soar 5,500 - 6,500 feet above sea level, full sun, and a constant equatorial mist. For the better part of the 1900s Rwanda's coffee industry suffered under poor farming, over farming, and a lack of attention to quality. That all changed after the 1994 genocide when the Rwandan government seeking ways to increase national exports turned to coffee as a keystone for the nation's future economic survival. The government funded numerous training programs and facility renovations and most importantly encouraged the formation of Cooperatives to ensure growers kept the bulk of proceeds from harvest sales. The results were dramatic. Today Rwanda's coffee quality can rival even the greatest East African's with it's wonderfully bright and rich with balanced chocolate and sweet berry notes. Our particular crop originates in Karongi located in western Rwanda on Lake Kivu's shores roughly midway between Gisenyi and Cyangugu and roasted to a rich full city shade. This is a wonderful afternoon coffee that will leave you smiling, inspired, and ready to embrace the spirit of potential that brims at the edges of each cup. To learn more about Mills Coffee click
